The core of any hosting services provider is its network. ServerMotion is unlike any other in that we disclose the full details of our network because we feel it is only an incentive for you to host with us. Beginning at all ServerMotion servers is a full-duplex 100Mbps link into the ServerMotion network. For shared, reseller, and dedicated customers, our Cisco Catalyst switches connect you to a PIX or ASA firewall where some of the strongest security policies in the industry are enforced. Our firewall is then connected to the ServerMotion external network that connects directly to the data center backbone.
If you are a co-location customer, or an unmanaged dedicated customer, you are provided with one or more drops for your network and devices which then connect directly to the ServerMotion external network.
Once inside our network, traffic from customer-facing switches is connected to a high-speed 10Gbps network which go on to the core and border routers. Utilizing BGP and high-level advanced intelligent routing technologies from Avaya, your traffic is sent down the best of multiple Internet backbone providers. At this point, traffic is considered to be on the public Internet.
Deciding which of the many backbones each piece of traffic is to be sent down is a task handled by routers. The common protocol used to share information about where devices are on the Internet is called BGP (Border Gateway Protocol). This is the method in which routers talk to each other and maintain a database of devices on the network and the paths to those locations. BGP has limitations, though. One of the most significant problems is that BGP does not take into account latency or the amount of times it takes to get from one point on the Internet to another. In hosting, low-latency is crucial.
To overcome this, Adaptive Networking Software by Avaya (formally RouteScience) is used. Adaptive Networking Software (ANS) provides adaptive management for network infrastructure. The software can monitor, assess, and adjust the network environment in real time to maximize applications availability, while optimizing between cost and performance. The result is a network infrastructure that is self-healing and self-optimizing. The software optimizes routes on the 11Gbps network in real time 7000 times per minute based on traceroute performance to ensure that your servers have the highest performance routing.
